Personal Trainer

Following on from an article I posted on my blog a few weeks ago : The Adonis Complex, I received the following email from Dan Heatley – a Preston based Personal Trainer…

Hi Russell,

I have to say what a great article on the Adonis Complex and thank you for inviting me to give some of my thoughts… I think that this “disorder” has been apparent for sometime now. People are going to the gym which is great , but some are going for all the wrong reasons. Gyms are designed for everybody to live a healthy happier lifestyle; to socialise, to relieve stress, to improve there fitness and well-being, to improve physiques and mentality. It is about making a “lifestyle change” to be a better YOU! As a personal trainer I am constantly getting people approaching me who are wanting to change there bodies to look like the “impossibly perfect” celebrities such as; Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) or Kate Moss (model).

In my opinion it is great to have role models, however the media is corrupting people’s minds by making them more image conscious than health conscious. According to this BBC News Article, there are approximately 1.6 million people in the UK affected by an eating disorder, and this figure is rising! People are becoming so self indulged and image conscious that they are putting there health at risk. Anorexics have low body fat and could be starving themselves of essential nutrients, increasing their risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. On the other hand many males/ females are resorting to drug enhancements to get that dream body they see in the media. I’m a great believer in practice what you preach; so teach my clients to live a healthy, happier lifestyle the right way.
